Are you a director of a company? You now need a Director ID!

New legislation requires that all directors of Australian companies must have a director identification number (DIN).

What is a DIN?

A DIN is a unique 15-digit identifier that a director will apply for once and will keep forever - even if they cease to be a director, change their name, or move interstate or overseas.

The purpose of introducing DINs is to prevent the use of fictitious director identities, assist regulators to trace directors’ relationships with companies and to better identify directors involved in unlawful activity.

When do I need to apply for a DIN?

When you must apply for a DIN depends on the date you became a director.

If you were appointed as a director:

  • on or before 31 October 2021, you must apply for your DIN by 30 November 2022

  • between 1 November 2021 and 4 April 2022, you must apply within 28 days of your appointment

  • from 5 April 2022, you must apply before you are appointed as a director

Failure to comply with the new DIN requirements may result in both civil and criminal penalties, so we encourage existing directors to complete this requirement as soon as possible.
